Composing Residency Outline

ideally suited for 5 th and 6 th grade students

This is an in-school residency to involve students in composing music by working in teams to create "group compositions."

All of the students attend an introductory assembly.

This is a chance to see and hear all that they will be able to do when they come for their session with Tom and all of his equipment. <15 minutes>

Teams of 4 5 (maximum) students come to their individualized composing session.

Trial, error, experimentation, and success are all experienced as these students create their own piece of music. <40-45 minutes each session>

All of the students come to a performance of the student compositions.

< 60-minutes for each assembly >

Approximate time away from other curriculum: 2.5 hours.

Duplicated tapes of the student compositions return to the school where students may make their own copy to keep.

Team size affects the impact of the residency. Available time and budget obviously enter into this planning. If a team is too large an individual may decide to take a "free ride" through the whole experience. But, with a proper team size everyone can be creative and can have something to contribute. Groups of 2-5 work best.

Magic with Math. How many students can participate in a given amount of time?

  • Approximately 8 teams per day
  • 4 to 5 students per team
  • 32 to 40 students per day
  • Remember to include 15 minute intro session for all teams
  • And, a lunch break every day (!)
  • Include time for the concluding assembly/assemblies
  • Fees are based on a day rate with a discount for multiple days. Computer-based musical instruments are provided by Tom.
