ASA Diamonds of the North

Portage, IN

No Game Summaries of Pool Play will be posted for this tournament...Kim was late this weekend!! All three pool play games ended in favor of the Edge.  The team defeated the Indy Smoke, 9-1; then cranked out victories of 7-3 over the Indiana Outkast and 10-1 over the Illinois Angels.  The ladies finished up the last pool game around midnight Friday.  (I did see the end of that game...great job, Edge!)

Tournament :

Game 1 vs. Michiana Inferno

First up for the Edge, Hannah Zimmerman started the game with a shot to right, showcasing her speed by beating out the throw to one.  Following a strike-out, Zimmerman scored from first on a huge Cassie Loweth triple to DEEP Left Center  Two infield grounders ended the top of the first.  Edge Pitcher, Miranda Hollenbaugh started the bottom of the first with a strike-out.  The second batter reached base on a walk, but was thrown out at second by catcher, Chrissy Rankin as the umpire called strike-three on the third batter.

Rankin then started the top of the second in the number 5 spot, with a walk, then reached second and third on two passed balls.  With Rankin on third, Heather Hayes and Alicia Garrison also walked on.  Kelsey Morris picked up an RBI by sending Heather Hayes home on a sac fly to centerfield  The ball was relayed in quickly and the Inferno caught Rankin by about 1/2 step at home.  With one out, Hannah Zimmerman singled, then scored along with Alicia Garrison when Lauren Smith dropped on in, in leftfield.  Cassie Loweth was able to reach first, while scoring Smith from two, when the defense committed an error in centerfield.  The Inferno Centerfielder missed Smith at home with a long throw, while giving Loweth just enough time to advance to second.  The Inferno made a pitching change after Lauren Nacke sent a shot to Centerfield.  With Nacke stranded on second, the Inferno were able to get the third out and end the top of the second inning.  Hollenbaugh delivered two consecutive strike-outs with the first six pitches of the bottom of the second.  Inferno batter #3 did manage to foul a few pitches before striking out to end the second inning.

In a repeat of the 2nd inning, Chrissy Rankin was back up to start off for the Edge offense, and again she walked.  Rankin then attempted to advance on a drop third but was thrown out at second by just a step, for two outs.  Alicia Garrison started a two out rally with a shot to centerfield, which was followed by a shot to left by Kelsey Morris.  Garrison then scored from three when Hannah Zimmerman dropped one in over second base.  Both Morris and Zimmerman advanced on a passed ball, then Smith walked on to load the bases.  In another repeat of the first inning, Cassie Loweth again a reached third base on a DEEP hit to Left Center, which scored Morris, Zimmerman and Smith.  Loweth herself scored when Maggie Cooper sent a hard grounder up the middle.  After five run, two out Edge rally, the Inferno finally got that third out and came back to plate to face Hollenbaugh again.

Feeling the pressure of the fourth inning just around the corner and the score skewed in favor of the Edge, the Inferno seemed to turn up the intensity.  The first batter sent a hard line-drive toward right, but was sent back to the dugout when Maggie Cooper snatched the ball from the air before it could pass first for out number one.  The second batter singled up the right side; and the third scored that runner on a decent shot.  With one run across and one runner on, the Edge turned it up.  The next two batters were thrown out first by Alicia Garrison from short, then Hollenbaugh scooped and tossed to Cooper at first.

In a three-peat, Chrissy Rankin led off for the Edge again.  She was unable to reach first this time when the opposing short stop stopped snagged a hard grounder.  Heather Hayes drew a walk and was really moving when she slid just under the tag, safe at third, after Garrison hit down the third baseline.  Kelsey Morris picked an up RBI on, again, a sac fly to center scoring Hayes.  Alicia Garrison, now on three and Hannah Zimmerman, up next for the Edge combined to demonstrate the kind of offense that sets the Edge above the rest.  Zimmerman showed her amazing speed when she sent a grounder to third and beat out the throw.  Then Garrison, always smart on the base path, jumped off third to bring the first baseman's attention across the field long enough for Zimmerman to move to second.  After missing out on a couple of routine opportunities, a stunned Inferno defense had two runners on and Lauren Smith, hitting in the two spot, up to the plate.  Smith sent a hard grounder to the left side, scoring Garrison when the shot was bobbled.

Finally able to close out the top of the inning, The Inferno were back up for their final chance of the game.  The Edge defense allowed the first batter to reach first on an error.  Then following a Hollenbaugh strike-out, a hit by the third batter meant there were two runners on with only one out.  Cassie Loweth got the lead runner at three when she scooped up a grounder and stepped on the bag.  Loweth went to Cooper at first, just missing the double play.  A hit then loaded the bases for the Inferno, but their hopes were ended when Loweth picked up another grounder at third and went again to Coopers to end the game, 13-1, Edge.  Great job, Edge!

ASA Diamonds of the South

Evansville, IN

Pool Play - Game 1

In game one of pool play at Diamonds of the South in Evansville the Edge faced Indiana Earthquake Gold.  The two teams split at the same tournament last year.  In this meeting, the first two innings were uneventful with neither team scoring.  The Edge did at least put the ball in play.  In the top of the second, Cassie Loweth and Miranda Hollenbaugh each singled and Chrissy Rankin drew a walk.  Unfortunately, the Edge were unable to get anyone across the plate.  Their opponents failed to even reach base.

Miranda Hollenbaugh was on the mound and delivered four strike outs in those first two innings.  Her effort was aided twice by Hannah Zimmerman, shortstop, who caught a pop-up in the first, then fielded a grounder and went to Lauren Nacke at first for the out in the second inning.

In the top of the third, Tylyn [          ], filling in for the Edge was first at bat.  Quick thinking and even quicker feet got her to first on a drop third strike.  Hannah Zimmerman, who has amazing speed, moved Tylyn to second on a great bunt and almost beat out the throw at first.  Tylyn spent very little time on second, as she scored when Lauren Smith singled with a slap just over the infield.  Two more outs and the Edge went into the bottom of the inning up, 1-0.

A scoop and toss to Lauren Nacke at one by Zimmerman, along with two more Hollenbaugh strike-outs brought the Edge to the plate again.  Up first, Hollenbaugh helped her own cause by sending a shot to deep center.  Rounding first it looked to be a close play as the Earthquake centerfielder retrieved and fired the ball. Hollenbaugh slid under the tag for the extra base.  With a shot to second, Chrissy Rankin moved Hollenbaugh who reached third with another great slide; this time a hook.  With one out, Kelsey Morris picked up an RBI on a sac fly to right sending Hollenbaugh home.  The opposing leftfielder made a great catch to end the top of the inning when Heather Hayes sent a beautiful shot her way.

In the bottom of the fourth catcher, Kelsey Morris came out to field the bunt and fire to Lauren Smith covering one for out number one.  That was followed by the good pick-up of a hard shot to Chrissy Rankin at third.  Rankin went to Nacke for the out.  One more Hollenbaugh strike-out put the fourth in the books.

In the top of the fifth, Hannah Zimmerman sent a shot to short.  The opposing short stop bobbled once and that was enough.  Given Zimmerman's speed once the ball is bobbled, you might as well stick it in your pocket - she's on first!  Hannah was followed by the two Laurens.  Lauren Smith drew a walk and Lauren Nacke sent a shot to left that was too hot to handle.  Disappointingly, with bases loaded, the Edge did not score that inning.

The bottom of the fifth was pretty much the par for the course, to that point.  The first batter hit straight into the glove of Nacke at first, who then tagged the bag for an easy out.  They did manage to reach base on a walk, but two more Ks and fifth inning was history.

The sixth inning brought another run for the Edge.  However, runners were again left stranded.  Chrissy Rankin, who was first up, doubled to left field.  Heather Hayes and Tylyn [          ] each walked on.  With bases loaded, all runners advanced on a passed ball.  Chrissy Rankin scored and that would be the final run for the Edge.  The bottom of the sixth was much of the same for the Earthquake offense; two more Hollenbaugh strike-outs and a pop-up to Rankin at third.

First up for the Edge in the seventh was Lauren Nacke who singled up the middle for the only Edge hit of the final inning.  The Edge went into the bottom of the seventh up 3-0.  The first batter sent a high fly ball to shallow centerfield.  The Edge defense was all over it!  Lauren Smith, moving back from second base, Hannah Zimmerman over from short and Heather Hayes over from left field were all in good range as Cassie Loweth came charging up from Centerfield, calling everyone off.  Loweth got under the ball and made the easy catch for out number one.  A single up the middle and a homer by the opposing offense brought the score to 3-2 Edge.  In true Edge fashion, there was no panic, no falter in the defense.  Two more Hollenbaugh Ks sealed the deal, giving the Edge a win in their first outing of the summer season.  Good game ladies!!  It's a pleasure to be back with all of you, watching you win again!!

Indy Edge vs Diamond Chix

In game three of elimination play at SportZone, the Edge faced the Diamond Chix.  The top of the Edge line-up started the game by loading the bases.  With Hannah Zimmerman, Alicia Garrison and Micah Docherty

all getting on with base hits, Cassie Loweth stepped up and sent a hard shot down the third baseline.  The third basement made a great snag and got Zimmerman at home to stop the score.  Miranda Hollenbaugh, after having hit a home run in the first game of the day, was up next.  She picked up an RBI on sac fly to left scoring Alicia GarrisonAshley Campbell, filling in for the Edge again today, sent one sailing to the right side, but was caught.

Miranda Hollenbaugh took the mound for the Edge.  Following an infield pop-up handled by Cassie Loweth and two Hollenbaugh strike-outs, the inning was in the books.

Lauren Nacke started the second inning reaching base after being hit by pitch.  Chrissy Rankin, up next, delivered a hard hit grounder.  Lauren Nacke made efforts to break up the double play, but the Chix defense executed well and turned a pair.  Kelsey Morris then lost a long battle with the pitcher.  The second inning ended quickly when Hollenbaugh returned to the mound and sat down the first three hitters.

The Edge was back at the top of the line up in the top of the third.  Hannah Zimmerman was on with a slap over the pitcher's head, helped by erred infield throw.  Alicia Garrison moved Zimmerman into scoring position on a single thru the left side.  The second baseman gloved a hard shot from Micah Docherty, but Garrison had a good jump and was moving too fast for her to put the tag on.  The Chix had to settle for one out and all runners advancing.  Cassie Loweth slapped, scoring Hannah Zimmerman from third.  Another erred throw allowed Garrison and Loweth to move forward.  Garrison barreled into home, but the Chix catcher saw it coming and held her ground.  Miranda Hollenbaugh was just thrown out by a step, following a great snag of her slap by the second baseman.

The bottom of the third looked pretty much like the first two from the Edge defense.  Hollenbaugh doled out two more strike-outs and Garrison snagged a grounder at short and got the batter with  a throw to Nacke at one.

A 2-0 lead going into the top of the fourth wasn't quite comfortable enough, so the Edge turned it on!  Ashley Campbell singled on a fly ball that was still on the upward move when it hit the net and was knocked to floor in left.  Lauren Nacke had a foul ball caught off the net.  Chrissy Rankin knocked one just over the head of the short stop, and just deep enough for Campbell to reach second unscathed.  Kelsey Morris sent one to the same place, but the short stop got her with a jumping catch.  Rankin and Campbell displayed smart base running with tight leads that kept them alive.  Hannah Zimmerman moved everybody along the base path with a hard single up the middle.

With the bases loaded, the Edge chipped away at the Chix defense with singles to left from Alicia Garrison and Micah Docherty and a hard bouncer up the middle from Cassie Loweth, all three earning RBIs.  With bases still loaded and the score now 5-0 Edge, Miranda Hollenbaugh stepped up and belted out a GRAND SLAM! to bring the score to 9-0.  Ashley Campbell was caught on the fly to close out the top of the fourth; then took the hill in the bottom.

A hard Chix hit came off the net right behind the flags, bouncing just in front of Lauren Smith at second.  Smith was able to take control and get her with a toss to Lauren Nacke at first.  A walk and strike-out gave the Chix a runner on with two outs.  The next batter bounced one straight up the middle, just out of reach of Garrison and Smith who were both moving quickly in the middle infield.  Micah Docherty moving up from centerfield for backup made a great snag and held both the batter and the runner to only one base.  Ashley Campbell showed great reaction on the mound as she scooped up a hard grounder and threw out the final batter of the inning.

Starting the fifth up 9-0, Lauren Nacke drew another walk and Chrissy Rankin bounced a ground rule double over the center field fence.  Lauren Smith was in to run for the catcher.  Kelsey Morris scored Nacke on a sac fly.  Smith moving in to score from third, was caught in a rundown when Hannah Zimmerman's slap took a crazy bounce back toward the catcher.  Alicia Garrison was caught off the net.

Hannah Zimmerman was in to pitch in the bottom of the fifth.  Kelsey Morris fielded shot in left and fired to Nacke, narrowly missing the out at one.  After the runner advanced to second on a passed ball, Cassie Loweth held her there with a great snag and a look from third.  Loweth fired to Lauren Nacke on first, who tagged the bag and came off ready to fire back across.  The runner retreated and was held at two.  After a walk and a catch in left by Kelsey Morris, the Chix had two outs and two runners on.  An infield slap to Alicia Garrison at short ended the game with a Garrison to Nacke throw to get the batter.  The final score was 10-0, Edge.

The Edge would then face the Indy Crush in the Championship game.  A summary of the final game will be posted soon.

Indy Edge vs. Shockwave

Filling in for the Edge, Ashley Campbell started on the mound in  the first game of elimination play Saturday evening.  The team only allowed only one runner on in the top of the first, followed by a slap hit back to the pitcher, a strike-out and a pop-up off the net to Jamie Goss.  The bottom of the first looked much like the top.  Hannah Zimmerman lead off and sent a fly ball to Centerfield, but was the only runner on for the Edge that inning.

Jamie Goss gloved a hard hit ball up the first baseline and tagged the bag for the first out of the second inning.  That play was followed by two strike-outs.

In the bottom of the second, the Edge came out swinging!  Miranda Hollenbaugh started with a single to center field, then advanced to second on a passed ball.  Ashley Campbell sent a hard shot up the middle for a double, moving Hollenbaugh to third.  Lauren Smith came in to run for the pitcher and  Lauren Nacke stepped up with runners on two and three.  She had a nice hard shot to third, scoring HollenbaughKelsey Morris picked up two RBIs on a hard hit ground rule double to left field.  Morris was moved to third when Chrissy Rankin sent a good one to centerfield.  Lauren Smith was then back on the base path and stole second, running for the catcher, Rankin.  The Shockwave infield couldn't get hold of Cassie Loweth's slap which scored Morris from third.  Jamie Goss reached first and picked up an RBI, scoring Smith, with a shot to third.

The score was 6-0, Edge, going into the third.  With Cassie Loweth on the hill, the Shockwave were unable to score.  The bottom of the inning looked much like the previous.  Lauren Nacke homered to make the score 7-0, followed by a hard hit grounder through the left side delivered by Chrissy Rankin.  With Lauren Smith back in to run for Rankin, Hannah Zimmerman showed her speed, slapping in the infield and beating out a throw from the pitcher - amazing speedAlicia Garrison loaded up the bases with another grounder shot up the left side. Cassie Loweth then stepped up and hit like Cassie hits!  She sent a great shot out to center.  Barely grazing the net, it slowed just enough to keep it from going over.  Loweth picked up two RBIs on that hit.

Loweth then delivered two strike-outs and a put out at first to end the top of the fourth for the Shockwave, who wouldn't get another chance to score.  In the bottom of the fourth, the Edge brought their short game to the Shockwave infield.  With no runners on, Miranda Hollenbaugh got on with a bunt, followed by another bunt from Ashley Campbell.  Both runners advanced on the first pitch to Lauren Nacke, who also reached base on a bunt. Kelsey Morris laid down a bunt, scoring Hollenbaugh.  With bases still loaded, time ran out; Edge 10-0 over Shockwave.

Indy Edge vs. Indy Smoke

With eight players, the Edge appeared to be starting off flat.  But after allowing the Smoke to load the bases, the team held them scoreless in the top of the first inning.

In the bottom of the first, Alicia Garrison was the first runner on when she was hit by a wild pitch.  Then Cassie Loweth bounced a hard grounder over the third baseman's head for a single.  Miranda Hollenbaugh loaded the bases with a hard shot up the middle.  A walk, drawn by Kelsey Morris scored Garrison.  Unfortunately, the Edge were unable to score anyone else that inning.

The top of the second went quickly as Hollenbaugh delivered three strike-outs in a row.  Ashley Campbell, filling in for the Edge, started the bottom of the inning.  After a long hard at bat, fouling shots just outside the third baseline and one questionable foul barely hitting the flags, Campbell singled on a good shot to left field.  Jamie Goss, also filling in, sent a shot up the middle for another single.  Campbell was barely thrown out at two.  Hannah Zimmerman advanced Goss and reached first to give Alicia Garrison two runners on.  Garrison bounced one over the fence in left center for a ground rule double and an RBI.  Zimmerman scored on Cassie Loweth's single over third base.  Loweth then stole second on the first pitch to the next batter, Miranda Hollenbaugh, who eventually drew a walk.  With bases loaded, there was a pop-up and a base running error to end the inning.

The top of the third went about like the second with three up, three down.  The first opposing batter attempted a bunt down the third baseline, but was stopped by a Lauren Nacke throw to Cassie Loweth, over from second to cover first base.  That play was followed by two more Hollenbaugh strike-outs.  In the bottom of the fourth, Ashley Campbell belted out a homerun for the fourth run of the game.  Congratulations Ashley!

With about six minutes to go, the Edge shut down any hopes for the Smoke.  Cassie Loweth made an awesome diving catch at second base and Hollenbaugh struck out the next two batters to end the game.

Indy Edge vs. Indy Crush

Saturday's first pool game started with the Edge winning the coin toss.  The home team took the field with Miranda Hollenbaugh on the mound.  The top of the first went pretty quickly with Hollenbaugh delivering three strikeouts.

The bottom of the first didn't move as quickly for the opponents.  Leading off for the Edge was Lauren Smith who singled with a hard shot to short stop, easily beating the throw.  Carly Cutler was 2nd in the line-up with another hard infield shot but the Crush got the lead runner at 2 on a fielder's choice.  With Cutler on base, Cassie Loweth had a huge shot over the fence for a two run homer.  Following Loweth's big hit was Miranda Hollenbaugh with a huge hit of her own.  If not for the indoor ceiling net, Hollenbaugh's shot would have sailed over the left field fence.  Instead, she settled for a great single when the left fielder was unable to handle the ball.  Alicia Garrison advanced Lauren Smith who was in to run for HollenbaughMaggie Cooper doubled to score Lauren before the end of the inning.

The top of the second seemed to be a repeat of the first for the Crush, with two more strikeouts from Hollenbaugh and Lauren Smith's Catch off the net.  Unfortunately, the Edge didn't fair much better.  Lauren Smith doubled, down the third baseline, in the bottom of the inning but the Edge couldn't bring her in for the score.

An Edge error allowed the Crush one runner on in the third.  The runner was unable to advance with Alicia Garrison catching one off the net, followed by two more Hollenbaugh strikeouts.  The arrival of Lauren Nacke in the third brought even more impending danger for the opponents.  Coach Mark Cutler came out to warm up Nacke and Hannah Zimmerman was in to coach first base for the Edge.  Good job, Hannah...Coach Cutler move over!  Cassie Loweth had a big shot up the middle for a single.  This time Miranda Hollenbaugh was able to send one over for another Edge two-run homer!!  Alicia Garrison drew a walk, Maggie Cooper singled to left, Kelsey Morris was robbed in deep right and (the sub) walked.   The Edge left three runners stranded.

Another catch off the net for Garrison at short stop started the top of the fourth, followed by two more Ks from Hollenbaugh.  Back at the top of the Edge lineup-up, Lauren Smith slapped just over the head of the short stop for a single.  Carly Cutler followed with a good hard shot to left.  With runners on 1 and 2, Cassie Loweth sent another one sailing but was robbed by the center fielder. But Miranda Hollenbaugh stepped in and cleaned up the bases with her second homerun of the game!!

Hollenbaugh delivered two final strike outs, and a pop-up caught by the catcher, Kelsey Morris ended the game.

Indy Edge vs. Indy Nightmare

Game two of pool play at SportZone didn't start off as well for the Edge.  Miranda Hollenbaugh and Kelsey Morris lost the coin toss for the Edge (they're fired!).  The team didn't look like losers once the game started.  Lauren Smith led off against the Nightmare with a single to the short stop.  Micah Docherty made it for the second game and came out swinging.  Docherty advanced Smith with  pretty cool shot between the legs of the third baseman.  Hollenbaugh had another one to center field, once again, robbed by the net.  Smith scored on an overthrow that went into the Edge dugout.  Both Hollenbaugh and Docherty scored on an Alicia Garrison double.

Maggie Cooper was in to pitch for the Edge with a strike out in the bottom of the first.  Lauren Smith made a good catch off the net for another out, and Garrison at short to Lauren Nacke on first closed out the inning.

In the top of the second, Kelsey Morris and (the sub) both drew walks.  With Carly Cutler in to run for the catcher, Lauren Smith hit up the middle to put one more on the board for the Edge.  Micah Docherty also had an RBI in the second, with a hard to handle bouncer straight up the middle.  The opponents managed to get a runner on with a decent hit to centerfield.  Then a walk allowed another runner.  Following a strike-out, the lead runner advanced on a passed ball, but third base is as close as they would come.  Two Ks in a row from Maggie Cooper ended the inning, leaving the two runners stranded.

With Hollenbaugh and Garrison walking on, Maggie Cooper loaded the bases with a shot past short in the third.  It was a disappointing inning for the Edge who were unable to score with bases loaded.

Cassie Loweth came in to pitch and promptly delivered three strike-outs in the third and two more in the fourth.  Carly Cutler also had a good catch in the fourth.

Pitching/Catching Summary from Coach Rick Hollenbaugh

Maggie Cooper, Miranda Hollenbaugh and Hannah Zimmerman combined to pitch 32 innings in 5 games, facing 132 batters and striking out 31 vs. 9 walks.  Hollenbaugh took the hill for 18 innings followed by Cooper with 11.5 innings and Zimmerman threw 2.5 innings.  The pitching staff worked ahead in the count most of the time and when they got behind they kept the ball low to minimize the big hits, the pitch calling were excellent as catchers Kelsey Morris and Chrissy Rankin called the shots from underneath.  With great catchers behind the plate and a great defense behind, the pitching staff could relax and play 9 against the batter. More BAD news for opposing teams...the pitching staff will only get stronger as we await Cassie Loweth's return to the mound after she finishes her therapy.

                                  Play-by-Play Game Summaries

Game 1

In Game 1, the Edge faced the Dolls Rebels.  In a scoreless first inning,  Maggie Cooper gave up no hits; Hannah Zimmerman had a base hit and Micah Docherty drew a walk.

The game remained scoreless until the third when the Dolls loaded the bases on the Edge with a hit, a sac bunt, a walk and an error.  One more error scored two before the Edge closed out the top of the inning with Lauren Smith snagging a grounder and going to Lauren Nacke at first to get the batter.  With two unearned runs against them, the Edge had only one runner on, Kelsey Morris who drew a walk, in the bottom of the inning.

The defense came back strong.  Lauren Smith relayed a great throw from Micah Docherty in center field to stop the first batter in the fourth.  The dolls had one runner on that inning, but weren't able to advancer her.  The Edge had dialed in on the Dolls' pitching.  Alicia Garrison went deep right for a triple and Hannah Zimmerman got the bat on the ball and went deep left but was shut down by a good catch.

Miranda Hollenbaugh took the mound for the Edge, striking out three batters in the fifth and giving up only one hit.  In the bottom of the fifth, the Edge were on fire and working the left side of the outfield.  Lauren Nacke hit to left for a single, Cassie Loweth went deep left for a double, then Miranda Hollenbaugh also hit to left scoring Lauren.  Runners advanced on a loose ball behind the catcher.  A hard shot down the third baseline by Heather Hayes scored Miranda and Cassie easy.  Carly Cutler went deep left for a single; runners on 1 and 2. Kelsey Morris grounded out advancing the runners, then Maggie Cooper walked.  With bases loaded, a good shot up the middle by Alicia Garrison scored another run.  Lauren Smith slapped past third to score the final run of the inning for the Edge.

A three up, three down top of the sixth went quickly for the Edge defense.  In the bottom of the sixth, Micah Docherty and Lauren Nacke each walked, Cassie Loweth got on with an error.  Miranda Hollenbaugh stepped up with bases loaded just as time ran out.  The final score of game one was 6-2 Edge.

Game 2

Game two brought opponents, the Wasco Diamonds.  We won the toss again and Miranda Hollenbaugh had the ball for the Edge.  The top of the first moved fairly quickly with Alicia Garrison throwing out the first batter from short stop, Kelsey Morris catching the next trying to steal second and Hollenbaugh striking out the third.  Micah Docherty got on base in the first inning on an error, then stole second, but the rest of the line-up was unable to move her.

The game remained scoreless for the next five innings.  Hollenbaugh struck out three batters in the second and gave up only one hit.  In the third, there was a pop-up to Maggie Cooper on 1st, then a slap just over the infield scooped up in a great play by Chrissy Rankin, holding the runner at one.  The runner was advanced by a sac bunt picked up by Miranda Hollenbaugh who threw out the batter.  Lauren Nacke caught a pop-up to third base to end the top of the third.

With two outs in the fourth, Lauren Smith made a great running catch for the third out of the top half; then had a solid left field single to start off the bottom of the inning.  Hannah Zimmerman put down a nice sac bunt moving Lauren to second.  The inning ended scoreless. Miranda Hollenbaugh struck out one, two, three in the fifth.  Cassie Loweth then doubled to left and moved to third on a Hollenbaugh double to left.  Chrissy Rankin shot a single past first.  Heather Hayes came up next with two outs, bases loaded.  She sent a long hard shot toward centerfield only to be robbed by the wind, dropping the ball right into the opponents glove.

The Diamonds got a runner on in the sixth.  Cassie Loweth showed great coverage on the bunt, throwing out the batter.  A strike out, then a pop-up to Loweth on third ended the lone threat of the inning.  Carly Cutler shot a hard grounder through the left side and slid into second for a double.  She was moved to third by Maggie Cooper's sac bunt, but wasn't able to score.

Finally in the seventh, having held their opponents scoreless, the Edge scored to win.  Micah Docherty hit up the middle for a single.  The centerfielder bobbled but recovered just in time to get her at second.  Lauren Nacke then delivered a great stand up double to the left field fence and scored on Cassie Loweth's double, ending the game.  The final score in Game 2 was 1-0, Edge.

Game 3

In a late game on Saturday the Edge faced the Beverly Bandits.  The Bandit's roster included approximately half of Beverly Bandits Gold team who defeated the Edge last week in Elgin at the Homer Hawks tournament.

Coach Smith went out prepared and made a great effort, but lost the coin toss.  After the disappointment, Smith will have to work hard to earn his spot back, as he will surely be replaced next tournament.  The Edge may bring up Rick Hollenbaugh or Mark Cutler who have both been working hard on their coin flip skills.  Good luck, Coach!

In spite of the disappointing coin flip, the Edge played the Bandits tough while overcoming some questionable calls.  Miranda Hollenbaugh was back on the mound for the first three innings giving up no hits and only one walk.  Hollenbaugh drew a walk herself and was the only base-runner for the Edge in the first two innings.

In the third Chrissy Rankin reached base, with one out, on a centerfield error.  She was moved to third by Carly Cutler's sac bunt, then advanced to third on a passed ball.  A strike-out left her stranded and ended the top of the inning.  Maggie Cooper came in to pitch in the bottom of the third.  The first batter sent a hard shot to short stop.  Alicia Garrison made a great snag and threw to Cassie Loweth who had an awesome stretch at first.  Micah Docherty went to Loweth at one to get the next Bandit out.  The third batter walked on a very questionable ball four.  Then, after a very speedy Bandit put down a near perfect bunt and beat the throw, Heather Hayes made a catch in right to end the inning with runner stranded on 1 and 2.

Kelsey Morris started the fourth with a walk; followed by Lauren Smith who was hit by a pitch.  Hannah Zimmerman then executed an excellent bunt to advance both runners.  Micah Docherty sent a hard shot to the left side.  The Bandit's short stop made a great leaping catch and no one could advance.  A strike-out left the runners stranded.  In the bottom of the fourth, pitcher Maggie Cooper took a hard shot back to the shin.  Short stop Alicia Garrison was able to scoop it up and make the throw to Lauren Nacke at first for the out.  An infield pop-up caught by Nacke was followed by a close call at first in favor of the Bandits and a base hit.  With runners on 1 and 2 Cooper with great composure struck out the next batter to end the inning.

Hannah Zimmerman took the mound in the fifth, walking the first batter who was thrown out by catcher, Kelsey Morris to Alicia Garrison on an attempted steal.  Zimmerman  then delivered a strike out.  Micah Docherty snagged a hit to third and went to Lauren Nacke on first for the third out.

In the top of the sixth Chrissy Rankin hit past short and Heather Hayes walked on.  Carly Cutler laid down a bunt in an attempt to advance the runners but the Bandit's went to three to get Chrissy.  Two strike-outs left runners on first and second.  The Bandit's had two outs and two runners on when Miranda Hollenbaugh took the mound in the sixth.  Lauren Smith made a good play at second to end the inning.

In the top of the seventh, it was time to make something happen and the Edge did just that.  Lauren Smith drew another walk.  Hannah Zimmerman finally went down after a long battle and some questionable calls in a great at bat.  Micah Docherty put one in right field to give Lauren Nacke runners on one and two.  Nacke smoked the ball to deep, deep right field.  With the Bandit's playing deep, Docherty held ready between first and second until the ball dropped.  Lauren Smith scored and with Nacke right on her heels, Docherty rounded second and went on to score with Nacke on third.  Cassie Loweth hit a shot to third and Nacke got caught.  With two outs, Miranda Hollenbaugh hit a triple driving Loweth in to score.

The Bandits were unable to score in their last at bat.  Hannah Zimmerman caught a fly ball in center; Micah Docherty, a pop-up to third and Hollenbaugh walked one and struck out the last batter.  The final score of Game 3 was 3-0.

Game 4

Following the late game on Saturday, the Edge drew the first game on Sunday morning.  Maggie Cooper started against the Fastpitch USA.  High winds sent a ball to Hannah Zimmerman for the catch in centerfield. Pop-ups to the corners were caught by Micah Docherty (3B) ad Lauren Nacke (1B).  The Edge had a slow first inning offensively with no runners on.

With Maggie Cooper still throwing in the second, there were three infield dribblers; one each to Lauren Nacke at third, Cassie Loweth at first and back to Cooper, all thrown out at first.  Loweth tripled to left and scored on Miranda Hollenbaugh's triple hit to centerfield to give the Edge one up at the end of the second.  The opponents answered with a run in the third.  With bases loaded, Lauren Smith made a great diving stop at second and tossed to Loweth on first for the out.  The game was tied at 1 at the end of the third.

Hollenbaugh opened the fourth inning delivering a strike-out to the opposing Fastpitch USA.  An attempted bunt was shut down by Lauren Nacke who came up from first with excellent coverage to throw to Lauren Smith covering one.  A fly ball to center allowed one runner on.  Then Alicia Garrison ended the threat with a stop at short to Nacke on one for the out.  Kelsey Morris started the bottom of the fourth with a hard shot up the middle and was moved to second by a Lauren Smith sac bunt.  Hannah Zimmerman followed with a triple to right scoring Morris from second.  Zimmerman was caught in a well-executed rundown on a failed bunt and run attempt.

Lauren Nacke came way in from third with awesome bunt coverage to deny the first batter in the fifth.  A gapper put a runner on who was then moved by a sacrifice.  Lauren Smith scooped and went from two to one for the third out.  In the bottom of the fifth, Lauren Nacke walked on.  The opposing catcher lost the ball on a dropped third and Cassie Loweth took off and reached second, while Nacke moved to third before the Fastpitch team recovered.  Both runners scored on a right field triple from Miranda HollenbaughAlicia Garrison got on by error and Hollenbaugh scored.   A sacrifice fly to center by Chrissy Rankin scored GarrisonHeather Hayes came to the plate and sent up a high fly to left field.  Hayes reached second base while the opposing outfield chased the ball.  Carly Cutler traded places with Hayes on second.  Maggie Cooper sent a hard hit ball to center but was caught for the second out.  Kelsey Morris shot a line drive double past third to score Cutler
