What is ARFS and how did it come to be?

ARFS is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the plight of homeless and lost domestic animals in Mills County, Iowa. Our goal is to build an animal shelter, where lost, abandoned and homeless pets can live until they can be reunited with their families or adopted.

In 1994 a group of animal lovers recognized the problem of unwanted animals in Mills County. This small group included a number of members who personally rescued, fostered and adopted out countless dogs and cats. They applied for and received non-profit status (501 C 3).

Why is there no shelter in Mills County and why is one needed?

Domestic animals are not a high priority in rural communities. Glenwood is fast becoming a bedroom community to Omaha because of I-29. Many animals are dumped in the area by people who think a domestic animal can fare in a rural environment. Many of these animals end up getting hit and killed on the interstate. ARFS and Mills County Communications receive calls regarding stray or dumped animals on a daily basis.
The population is quite small for the size of the county, therefore the tax base is low and there is nothing budgeted for animal control and/or care. Over the years ARFS members have met with the Glenwood City Council and the Mills County Supervisors for assistance in obtaining land for a shelter. We have recently purchased land and are beginning fundraising activities and grant applications.
ARFS has plans to use part of the land for a dog park that will be open to the public. Potentially a portion of the shelter building will be used for youth activities and animal training classes.

We have land, now we are raising money to build the shelter.
We can also use volunteers and families who would be willing to foster a pet until a home can be found.
